INDUSTRY CONNECT | Workshop: Where Sound Meets Story with Menaka Thomas
Online event, ,
Sun 09.08.2026 03:00
Industry Connect features a curated program of free workshops, masterclasses, talks and panel discussions for local artists and arts workers.
This two-part workshop series invites participants on a creative journey to explore how cultural identity and environment shape personal sound. Led by Australian–Indian artist Menaka Thomas, the sessions blend traditional vocal techniques — particularly from Carnatic music — with a contemporary framework. Through guided reflection and vocal experimentation, participants uncover the unique “sound” of their heritage and learn how to express it in fresh, resonant ways.
Be inspired to learn a shared vocabulary that transcends cultural differences, triumphs human spirit and the power of community and finds common ground to create something meaningful.
The online session is an introduction to Menaka’s practice, discussion of techniques, and an exploration of how voice and music is used in Back to Bilo to support the storytelling. The in-person workshop will be an experiential session where voices come together in a shared act of music-making.
