Mick Jagger May Be the World's Best Rockstar

The reason Jagger is possibly the world's best rockstar is not only because he's been around longer than most. It's also his involvement in every single aspect of the band's business. The band of course being The Rolling Stones – the richest in rock history.

"Jagger has made it his business to understand and control the mechanics of his own stardom"
The New York Times

People in the industry all say that working with Jagger is to work with a true, committed professional. Not just creatively, but also on the business and finances side.

He's one of the first to recognise that bands are also brands

"There was a window in the 120 years of the record business where performers made loads and loads of money out of records,.

But it was a very small window — say, 15 years between 1975 and 1990. Touring is now the most lucrative part of the band’s business".

The Rolling Stones have three entries on the Top 10 highest grossing tours of all time. Since record sales began declining, artists have started touring more frequently.

As a result, most of the highest grossing tours of all time took place after 2005. Not for The Rolling Stones' though, because their three entries go all the way back to 1994(!).

So what the music industry is coming around to now, The Rolling Stones has pre-empted and actively worked on for over two decades.

They are also ahead of the curve in terms of getting corporate sponsorships, selling song rights, and selling merchandise. These are now recognised as critical avenues for musicians to diversify their income.
